Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls—Understanding the Difference

Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls—Understanding the Difference

Pearls have always been a favourite of mine. Their lustre, subtle colours and individual shapes give each piece of jewellery its own character.

Freshwater cultured pearls grow in freshwater mussels, while saltwater cultured pearls include Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea varieties. Each offers a different beauty—from delicate white pearls to rich dark tones and warm golden shades.

Cultured pearls are genuine pearls, grown with human assistance. Their appearance varies according to the mollusc, its environment and the way the pearl is cultivated.

For me, choosing a pearl is about its character as much as its shape. A beautifully irregular baroque pearl can inspire a design all of its own.
